Our remarkable friend Michael is in the Intensive Care Unit at San Francisco General Hospital suffering burns over 80 percent of his body.

Truly dogs' best friend, Michael was pet sitting for a longtime friend when a fire broke out in the apartment building at approximately 2:30 am, February 6, 2007. Michael escaped, but returned to save Bobby, a Jack Russell Terrier from the burning building when he realized that he was still trapped inside.

Michael is fighting very hard , but is in extremely critical condition. Like ET and Elliot, Bobby is also hospitalized and in critical condition with severe burns at Pet's Unlimited in San Francisco.

Michael has a history of heroic actions. On Christmas Eve 2001 Michael witnessed a car accidentally plunge into the San Francisco Bay and without hesitation he jumped in and was able to rescue one of the two passengers. As a result of the rescue he was honored by The City.

Michael is an amazingly brave and spectacular guy with a heart of gold. He is an artist, designer, best friend, son, brother and a gift to all of us.

He is currently under the brilliant care of the phenomenal doctors, nurses and staff of the San Francisco General ICU who we greatly admire and give our most sincere gratitude.

Mikey's recovery and rehabilitation process will be a long struggle.
We have been repeatedly told “this is not a sprint, it’s a marathon….” which couldn't be more true. He will be undergoing intense surgery on a daily basis for the next six weeks. He will remain medically sedated for a prolonged time so that he does not experience pain. We anxiously await Michael's awakening and we know how much your support will mean to him when that day comes.

An account has been established at Wells Fargo Bank to support Michael through his long and costly rehabilitation which will take years. We encourage you to contribute anything that you can spare as even the smallest donation will mean a great deal to Michael and everyone who is diligently working on his behalf. If you desire information regarding the trust established to support Michael, please email: supportmichael@acieventgroup.com and we will be pleased to share the necessary information.

A thoughtful letter written by Michael's brother, Jim

Saturday, February 10

Along the way, you experience things. Most come and go without notice. A few leave a small imprint on your personality. And then, maybe, you experience something that wakes you up from your conscious sleep and alters your thinking, your outlook and, perhaps, your life. It tells you something about who you are and who you hope to be.

On February 6, 2007 a total stranger called and informed me that my brother, Michael, had been badly burned in a fire in San Francisco. That night my wife, Carla, and I drove from Maine to one of my sister’s houses outside of Boston and, after 3 restless hours of sleep, took the first flight out of Logan. Approximately 12 hours later, Carla and I walked into San Francisco General Hospital’s 4E ICU and looked at what I was told was my brother’s face. Although we mustered words of encouragement, we were looking at a nightmare. Badly burned, heavily sedated and chemically paralyzed, Michael was fighting for his life. Then, as we stood there stumbling for words, looking right at Michael’s face, Carla said, “he’s going to be ok”. When I looked up at her, I knew she meant it, and I knew she was right. I love my wife.

Leaving the ICU I knew Michael was going to survive, but I had no idea how he was going to live… and then I met his family… none of whom are related by blood. When I tell you that Michael has friends, you don’t understand what I am saying to you. Michael has a network of friends that humble you. Their unity, their openness, their energy and, above all else, their love for my brother is staggering. My brother is an artist and his worldly possessions fit inside the trunk of a car. That being said, as I sipped beers with his friends from all over the country after visiting hours, I couldn’t help but wonder why friendship wasn’t a measure of a man’s success.

With the Herculean effort of his friends, my brother’s story was publicized, his team was mobilized and his support efforts were formalized. About 12 hours later the story went national and The Michael J. Keenan Support Fund began receiving donations from total strangers… as much as anything, they seemed to want to support what Michael represents. I cannot properly express my humility and thanks.

Michael is still deep inside the woods, but he will find his way. When he emerges, perhaps weeks from now, I will be there, and I will certainly not be alone. The tribe will be gathered, and they will be ready. I hope that others will join us if for no other reason than to celebrate friendship, another and better way to measure a person’s success.

Humbled & Hopeful,

Jim

Medical Update

Tuesday, May 29th
As an update on Michael...

WOW… the guy’s a stud!! That's all I can say… ok, I guess I can add a bit more detail…

As I noted in an earlier report, in early April, after more than two months of complete sedation and multiple, grueling skin graft surgeries, Michael began to wake up and communicate with his doctors and friends. On April 16th Michael’s breathing tubes were removed. Incredibly, Michael instantly found his sense of humor and a realistic, but hopeful outlook. Michael has said that he realizes that he probably should not have survived the fire, but something inside him told him to hang on. He knows that his body is badly beaten, but acknowledged that if he's come this far, he's willing to continue on the path to recovery.

After leaving San Francisco General’s ICU, Michael was transferred to the Bothin Burn Center at St. Francis Memorial Hospital to begin rehabilitation. He has been there about a month and his progress has been astounding.

His body is healing very well. His hands are regaining functionality more and more each day, and he even has been walking on his own up to 100 feet at a time (with a walker). Michael is still medicated to help ease the pain, which is especially severe when he’s undergoing his daily and lengthy physical and occupation therapy sessions.

Michael’s friends have remained by his side throughout, and they report that his sense of humor is still very much intact. After speaking with him yesterday over the phone, I can confirm that he’s still a riot! Michael does have difficult days and sad times during the day, but I’m told that he always “steps up” when it’s time to work.

The current thinking is that Michael will be moved to the acute rehab section of the Bothin Burn Center in another 1-2 weeks and will remain there for several weeks more. Michael will then move into a new apartment that we located for him in one of the few “flat” areas in San Francisco – securing this apartment was made possible by all of your kind donations to The Michael J. Keenan Support Fund. When Michael saw where his next home was going to be, he cried. We’ve been told time and again that it is important that he feel safe. The love and generosity of his family and friends and the incredible generosity of those that don’t know Michael well (or at all), have made it possible for us to rent a safe and uplifting place for Michael to begin his out-of-hospital rehabilitation and recovery.

That being said, Michael is still a long, long way from re-entering society in a self-sufficient way. As a result, we are still actively seeking support for Michael’s ongoing rehabilitation and living expenses and encourage you to participate in one or more of the upcoming benefits and to share Michael’s story with your friends.

Michael,

You are a true hero, and my heart goes out to you as you recover. All too often, we see stories on the news about fires, and pets left behind. (In fact, on the same day you rescued Bobby, there was a fire in a San Jose apartment building; everyone interviewed on the news commented that their cats were still inside the building and all I could think was "HOW COULD YOU DO THAT??")

You, Michael, have shown the world the kindness a human soul is capable of. I hope you are an inspiration to many others, and that fewer animals will suffer in the future because of your brave example.

Best wishes to you,
Milinda

With the internet and worldwide news access that we all have today, we can hear good and bad stories from anywhere anytime. However, I am simply touched be Michael's story. I was a cop for a few years and have done a few things, even saved a dog by crawling in a tiny hole in the ground, and I can say that in the rare instance when you do something selfless like this, you don't think about recognition. At most, it is a quick thought about the value of helping someone. There is no thought about how great it will be to be called a hero (and I certainly am not comparing crawling in a hole for a dog to what Michael has done). My hunch is that Michael, a person I don't even know, just did this because of a split second judgment of what is right combined with his overall nature as a person. I worry that calling Michael a hero, even to his face, will mean nothing to him. He needs help, and that is why I am donating money. But still, if Michael reads this when he gets out, I want to say that both of the things you have done are truly great things. They are acts of giving and sacrifice, and although they have no direct impact on my life, I thank you, and I wish you a full recovery.

My own brother Michael was seriously burned as a child, and while technology is so much better now I fully know the very long and difficult path to recovery in front of you. Please know you now have thousands of new fans and supporters around the country who are rooting for your speedy recovery. And hopefully many of them will donate towards your medical bills, as I will do as soon as I complete this posting. Your courage and actions are an inspiration.

I've just finished reading the comments here. Barbara and I have always known Michael was truly special as a child growing up. What we didn't fully realize is just how special a man that child has become. Proof of that is here, in all your encouraging and loving comments. We love you all and thank you for your comments and support.

Michael--I am so very moved by your truly heroic selfless deed. If the world can be a place where even the littlest and least of God's creatures are so valued--then think how very much better off the WHOLE of creation will be.

Michael your act makes that vision a living reality.

I will be fervently praying for full recovery for both you and Bobby.

Dear Michael,
Happy Valentine's day--We are having a blizzard of Nor'easta' proprotions here in Maine and as the snow falls ,I think of you, and know you will be well -because your friends from everywhere are a testament to who you are as a human being and what you have given to all whose lives you have touched.."Friendship"

Such love I cannot analyze;
It does not rest in lips and eyes, Neither in kisses or caress.
Partly, I know, it's gentleness

And understanding in one word
Or in brief letters. It's preserved
By trust and respect and awe.
These are the words I'm feeling for.

Two people,yes, two lasting friends.
The giving comes,the taking ends.
There is no measure for such things.
For this all Nature slows and sings.

Elizabeth Jennings(poet)
My love and prayers and thanks to all who are there with you when we can not--and to you, sweetie..as the snow flies--I think of you..keep fighting the good fight. Love xxxooo, Pammy

Terri my dear, a porcupine dinner is like nothing you ever ate before, because if you ate one you'd be hooked for life. First, you need to scout the back roads and find fresh-killed porcupine. Once you find one, you need to remove all the quills (they make good pens).... aww shucks I can't do this to you, you're too sweet. A porcupine dinner is a meatball recipe, using rice in the meatballs. There's more to it than that, but the rice kinda looks like quills. The best part of the meatball and sauce is the doglips!! Yummy!! They are the best, especially when Aunt Barb makes 'em.

Hey, Michael, Lisa here, Goldenboy Pizza counter-hag extrordinaire! I hear so often about these crazy random injuries people sustain and when it happens to someone you know it is so hard to take. It doesnt matter that I havent had contact with you since 1992. What matters is that you were my freind and that you touched my life. I have often wondered where you were and even tried to find maineiac over the years. I am glad to know you have continued to be the kind of person I am proud to call my freind. It is an extraordinary thing that you did. Going back inside to save a life. Human or otherwise. I'm sure you knew you were taking a big risk. and sometimes we pay for our risks, but hopefully we still take them. I am grateful that you didnt pay with your life. I will be thinking of you often still and wish you the fastest painfree recovery possible. peace.

Hi Michael -- More than your actions, which were more selfless than any of us can imagine ourselves in similar circumstances, it is your spirit that shines through in the media accounts of your story. It's clear you are: bright, caring, fun-loving, and filled with light. That's why so many of these folks that don't know you (like myself), feel like they do, or could, or would. We'd be friends, I can tell. So -- theoretical friend, you have this incredibly difficult, long slog of recovery ahead of you. (I'm an artist type too, and had a residency that involved children in burn units of a hospital -- so I have just a glimpse.) You will need all the fortitude you can muster. But we know you have courage in spades, and a great support system of people who love you. Two key ingredients. And now you have a third: absolute strangers rooting like hell for you. I hope as the media spotlight fades that you (and your loved ones) will not feel that you will fade from our minds -- you will not. Your actions have imprinted your spirit into our hearts, indelibly.

Best of luck, and carrying you in my heart,

Nicole in Alameda

I was in a fire
I saw a moment where a best friend might not make it out
Really it was the friend of a best friend
A dear friend’s dog
The flames did not see my compassion
And had no compassion for me
They spared my life
But took some of my liveliness

The specially trained folks at hospital
Dressed in their complex pajamas
Started in poking and fussing from my head to my toes
Those toes that balanced my feet
Those feet that pushed my body
Back into a fire I had fled
Out of my body and all in my head
I never thought I wouldn’t make it
I’m not insane
That’s how I remain

My family, friends, and other who knew
What had happened
And to whom
Came to see, to give their good feelings
To someone who had lost some of theirs
Someone they love
Those people who care
I could feel them all
In a mysterious way
Through the pain
The numbness
The clouds and the rain
The fog that had built up on my windshield
As I defrost it’s them that links me to where I’ve been
The days before everything became foreign
And scary

How is that dog
What will this rocky road be like
This road I’m now on
Where will it take me
And what will I do when I get there
I know these people around me
And inside me will be there too
And that’s what it’s taking to get me through
To get me from what’s old
To what’s new

I was fine before
Inside and out
I’ll be just fine no doubt
And that kind of fine will always be mine
It’s my personal flame that will never burn out

Thank you all for the thoughts and the updates. To Michael's devoted friends thanks for being his home and family. If this tragedy had to happen, I was so glad he was in the place he considered to be "HOME" The only thing worse would have been if he was amidst strangers, in this fog.
To the medical staff thanks for your skills knowledge and compassion to michael, his family and friends. They bring the necessary "spirit" to Michael; you fill his necessary medical needs. your knowledge and committment have brought him back from the edge time and again.
To the strangers around the world who feel compelled and moved by Michael's story, you renew faith and brought focus to simple but important things like heroism and selfless acts, in a world that sometimes seems to have gone "mad" and lost it's way. Bothering and noticing his story and taking the time to say it's matters give's Michael's life meaning and fills everyone's heart with a reminder of what is really inmportant ----bothering to go out of your way to care for one another.
And thank you to the media for noticing a story worthy of telling so that all this love and caring COULD pour into Michael's room,so he could FEEL it,At a time, when it appeared that it was only all those good thoughts and prayers that would bring him back from the edge.
From where I sit, far away from his hospitol room, Michael has recieved 2 miracles so far.and I don't tend to believe in miracles and yet...he is STILL with us
Oh yes and I have forgotten the most important piece. Michael's own internal strength both physically and spiritually. I have no doubt that he has felt all of this positive energy. and am hopeful that he has been having pleasant and healing dreams in his medically induced coma.
We all know his road is still long and there will be likley be more bumps along the way before it;s all done.
But it seems to me Michael's biggest miracle is he's got one helluva a team on his side. and dmc thanks you had me crying like a baby --- again.!!!

I am friends with Micheal's Aunt Debbie Keenan in Portland Maine. I was amazed at the heroic story of Michael saving the dog. I wish him well. He is in my thoughts and prayers. I truely think the world is a better place with people like Michaelliving in it! I know Michael must have a long road to full recovery but I hope his story can be told nationally on a how such as Oprah. I know everyone has a story, but Michael's story brings inspiration to me. Michael's story is unique and courageous. I'ts a story no one will ever forget. I am glad the dog is still hanging in there as well. I am a true dog lover as well and a Hurricane Katrina volunteer for the dogs and cats. Melissa in Portland Maine

Hi Michael,
It's been a long, long time since I've seen you last. We were all much younger then. Our families camping-out together in the woods of Maine, brings many sweet memories of song, story, and cards at night around the camp fire. The days were filled with mischievously delightful idle as friendships swelled.

I was amazed to find out about your selfless rescue a few years ago. The bittersweet news of your most recent act of total giving gave me encouragement in knowing that we humans can shine like the sun. That our hearts can drive us to do good things. That we can be tender and noble. These are deeds we all need to hear more of.

You Michael, have grown to be one of those people that have challenged us all to look to our humanity for the good. Your acts are refreshing and have restored may faith in man, something that had been on the wane of late.
But wait... what's this I hear about you playing kissing tag with my sister Linda? Oh never mind.

Get well friend. Your body needs healing. But your soul is at the top of it's game.

I just found this site, and I don't know you but the story really touched me. I sent a contribution through your other site. As a RN who is recovering from a 6 month hospital stay last year myself, I understand a little of what Michael might be going through. Its incredibly difficult, but the support of family and friends is what makes even the worst days, good ones.

Michael - I work full time (full time volunteer I guess you could call it) doing animal rescue. I love animals more than people. Each day I type the word 'dog' into google news and read stories of bravery and love. Never have I read one that touched my heart as yours has. I think you are a very special person and now have a place in my heart for 'people' as well as critters. I wish you well.

Hey Keenano...We think about you every day and know that you are receiving our good vibes - from Maine to California. Growing up with you as a cousin was always an adventure...I think we all marveled at your love of life and willingness to take risks. You were never a conservative yankee - always a free spirit at heart. I never saw anyone with so many skinned knees, elbows and shoulders as you did as a kid from skateboarding or frisbee or soccer...you always had some kind of injury, road burn, sprain - even a couple of broken bones I remember! You know how to recover and bounce back...this is a lot more that a skinned knee, but you can approach it the same way - it won't slow you down for long nor will it change your spirit and love of life. My kids have asked a lot about you in the past couple of months, having only met you a few times, and it's been fun thinking about those days...the house on West Elm (and the cubby-hole at the top of the stairs), your Mom, AG's pool, camping, playing frisbee in the side yard, porcupine dinners...with many more memories to come. Please, please, please know that ANYTHING you need is only a phone call away. Much love, Karen and family.

Dearest Michael...sending you lots of love from Maine...thinking of you and praying for you every day. Since the moment AB called me with the news I have been replaying in my head all the special times we shared on West Elm Street. Every time I start to cry when I think about your trauma and pain a new happy memory from those years will slide into my awareness and my tears become ones of nostalgia... Although the world knew you as our cousin, to us you were our brother. You always had a home with us. We thought of you as a part of our home. We always will. When you weren't with us we missed you, but when you'd come back--it was like you never left. The house on West Elm wasn't big enough for all of us, but most of the time we didn't notice. We even managed to make one bathroom work. Every time you came to stay you never knew where you'd be sleeping--sometimes a mattress on the floor--sometimes a camp cot in the "girl's room". At one time you made yourself a room in the "cubbyhole" at the top of the stairs. You didn't care. You never complained. (You did however, make up stories that you'd be the first victim of Freddy Kruger when he broke in.) On the local news AB said you were always a good natured kid. She was right. We had a lot of fun times together. There were many nights of playing Battleship & Mastermind and that hockey game with those little metal men. We had many a croquet game on the front lawn and we'd throw the frisbee in the street right up til dark. Remember the time you tossed the frisbee and hit an oncoming car. The driver stopped and we were so scared. He got out of his car, opened his trunk, pulled out a new disc and apologized to us. We kept on playing, but couldn't believe what just happened. When Di, Linda, Karen & I were in majorettes you joined the drum corps. For two years you were constantly drumming those darn wooden sticks on anything you could tap on. It paid off though, you were given the outstanding drummer award. You were a pretty good baton twirler too (does your S.F. family know this?). We'd hold little competitions in the basement and you would hold your own with the girls. You were very creative. You loved sports. I remember going to your soccer games and driving you and your buddies to the Riverside Ice Arena. After we saw the movie "Rocky" you wanted to run the 10+ miles home. You were so pumped. You were always up for anything. You were the one to do the "speed shopping" at Andy's Handy Store ( I had to time you or you'd be in there for hours talking to everyone.) You were the one to hide under the blankets when we went to the drive-in. One of our best times was our bike trip to Crystal Lake with Pepo F. Looking back I see how much of a risk we took riding on those shoulders of Rte. 115. But our only casualty that day was you getting hit by a passerby's lit cigarette. But this just gave you one more story to tell... The times I remember most were Saturday nights at home with Diane, Linda, You & I (and sometimes Karen & Kristen when we let them stay up). Lots of games, t.v., and playing "restaurant". You were the only one to order my dessert concoctions. Does "Strawberry Supreme Surprise" ring a bell? The best times of all were our big family dinners or as you lovingly called them "30 People Feasts".(Thanks Mum!) The only bad memory I have of you--is when you would pull off your cleats or sneakers and WOW!! the phrase "Frito Feet" was born. Michael, my heart aches that you are enduring this horrible trauma, but I know in my soul you will come through this. You are a bright spirit on this earth. And although the world has you on hold right now your light is shining through. Your story continues to inspire all who come across it. Just read all these heartfelt messages. I want to thank all of your medical "Angels" for their continuous great care in helping bring you back to us. Love you lots........Kath

Thanks Barabra for mentioning Michael's upcoming birthday. And Kathy for sharing the "adventures" Your home was always a welcoming place.I'm glad he was always welcomed. It's nice to see it appears he will see another birthday!!! Let's all send him special thoughts on that day March 29th.
I remember the day he came home from the hospitol. No prouder 9 year old aunt was there!I rushed home from school at lunch time to meet this well anticipated bundle of joy. He lay in the small crib that had been mine 9 years earlier, taking his nap. His crib was swaddled in a cover we had sewn for him to protect him from the drafts and light. It was white with a pastel baby pattern on it. His aunt ginney had sent him a stuffed pink lamb from Texas(?) that would play a lullyby when wound up. We would wind it up when he went to sleep at night or to nap.And he was always asleep before the lullyby was done.
When he was a little older he became my pal.I would "steal" him away from the grownups at every opportunity. My friends and I would bundle up the littler ones in their carrriages and off we would go for a few hours or the afternoon The destination was often ice creme at a nearby ice creme fountain. At least that was the "excuse".
Or we would go to the play ground.Or take long meadering walks around the block inspecting every blade of grass, along the way. His favorite toy was a ride on firetruck, which he would ride around the house. Perhaps he was destined to be a firemen!!!!
I was fascinated by any Baby chore from learning the art of diapering to the task of making his formula. This in the days before formula came in a can and it really was an hours long task, several times a week. I was the observer and your mother's "helper".
And we used to have fun taking rides in your father's Ford Fairlane convertible in the summer time, with the top down of course. Silver outside red interior. Long before seatbelts were heard of.
Your birthday was often near easter time. And I thought that was so neat sharing your birthday with easter. So we're glad you are still with us to make it to another birthday My pal.I miss you and love you and continue to send you warm thoughts.Happy 44th bub!!! Aunt Deb

Hi Meeko.
Forty four years ago on March 29th you came into this world. It also happened to be my birthday which made you extra-extra-special to me! You were always such a friendly, good natured kid. Always. In all settings. You will always be my seventh child, no matter what. So, on March 29th I'll blow out candles on the birthday cake for both of us. And my wishes will be for you to stay strong in the recovery road ahead.
Happy Birthday Meeko.
I love you in big, BIG bunches.

Hey Michael ....
My turn. I can't remember your birth date because I hadn't yet met your Aunt Barb. I do have a recollection of Aunt Barb & me visiting you when you and your Mom and Dad were living in Massachusetts. You were about a year old, maybe less, and Aunt Barb and your Mom trusted me to watch you for a few minutes while they went somewhere else in the house for something. I think it took you about twenty seconds to roll off the bed onto the floor with a nice healthy sounding thump! I got hell from everyone, of course, and I still get ribbed about dropping you on your head. I always enjoyed the times you were able to spend with us and indeed I always looked upon you as the rest of the family did, as our seventh kid. You were a bit of a devil sometimes, not harmful, but ... hey, that's a different venue ... ;-)
Always a busy, active, outdoorsy kid, great soccer player, better than Beckham I'll bet!! And you were always so welcomed by us and all the kids, including the Perrons, when we were in our camping phase. I like to think that was where you learned to enjoy camping. Artistic. I wish we had seen more of your work. I was so happy to see you and your buds kick off Maine-iac; whether you think it was a failure or success, I know it was a success, because it taught you to keep moving forward no matter what. And it's here that I want you to remember, you've succeeded again, saved a cute friend of Janette's, and you will succeed again in your recovery effort. We're all praying for you to give you the strength to keep on fighting. You're past the most dangerous hump, now you've got the longest run ahead of you. I know you'll make it, no matter how tough it gets.
Michael, Happy, Happy Birthday, kid. I love you in big bunches, too. Stay strong.
xoxo

Michael I posted here early on and continue to check back, pray, cry, and hope for the best. Your latest blog entry is so hopeful that I feel my prayers for you are being answered. I know your recovery will be long and difficult. And I know you will be surrounded by your family and friends. Just want to remindyou that you have even more friends now. More then you know. We were elated to hear and see on the news that Bobby went home. The joy in his mom's eyes and her smile were as special and priceless as you are. If dogs pray, I know mine is pulling for you too.

Hi Michael - I think of you often, and send lots of healing thoughts your way from Cumberland, ME - I know you have been spared for a reason, as I was back in '67 when I survived a fatal car crash. I knew there was still more for me to do, and that is what I know about you. As Maria said, you are truly an angel and there are many around you all the time, keeping you healing and strong. I urge all those who are caring for you, and your wonderful family members, to see you how you can be, not how you are now - to hold the vision of you fully healed. Miracles have already happened and will continue - Happy, Happy Birthday to you tomorrow and many, many more!! My animal family and I will keep you in our hearts and be always grateful to be inspired by such an incredible spirit such as your's. Blessings from Maine :-)
